U4-U10 Outdoor Recreational Program
For U4 through U10, the teams are co-ed and the emphasis here is on fun, exercise and learning the game.
The U4-U10 programs have the following goals:
- Create a positive, low-pressure environment for all kids to get healthy exercise.
- Allow kids to play on teams with their friends so as to enjoy the program as much as possible.
- Make teams small so that all kids get a chance to touch the ball as often as possible.
- Provide a strong foundation in soccer skills and related physical coordination through minimal instruction and mostly the use of fun games and drills at the start of each session.
- Make teams as fair as possible, which in some cases may mean splitting up "superstar" players.
- Promote respect for teammates and other teams, and cheer all good plays.
All games are played at the same time and day each week. U4-U8 practices and games will be held at Reservoir Park (Location C) in Edgemont. U10 teams will play most games at the Edgemont School, but may play 3-5 games in the nearby Hamptons Fields (10330 Hamptons Blvd).
The season runs from late April to late June and includes a year-end BBQ. A Calgary Minor Soccer Association organized weekend Soccerfest is open to players wishing to participate at this kids tournament at the Calgary Soccer Centre in the city's SE. Shin guards are mandatory for all programs.
U4 Program

U5 Program
Tuesday and Thursday 6:00 p.m. - 6:45 p.m.This is the first year Edgemont has had a U5-only program. U6 Program

U8 Program

Team sizes should be about eight.
U10 Program

U12-U14 Outdoor Recreational Program
Deb Nakamura has volunteered to run the U12-U14 outdoor recreational soccer program. More information on U12-U14 soccer is available here.
Getting Started
Registrant's parents will be contacted by their team coach with schedules and other information prior to season start.
Volunteering
The Edgemont Soccer Association is a non-profit organization entirely run by volunteers. All families are required to fulfill at least one volunteer role as a condition of registration. If you have more than one child in our program, your family is only required to fill one volunteer role. An option to pay a non-volunteer fee is available, but discouraged since volunteers make the program possible. Without sufficient volunteers to run the programs, they are at risk of being cancelled. Please consider this fun and rewarding opportunity to make a difference for your kids and community.
The most critical recreational volunteer positions are for coaching. At least 2 coaches are required for each team and at the younger age group levels absolutely no experience is required. For more information about coaching, please read the coaching section below.
There are also numerous volunteer positions with the year-end BBQ, field maintenance workers, equipment volunteers, Soccerfest volunteers and age group coordinators.
Detailed job descriptions are available in the online registration system during the registration process.
As an added incentive for volunteering, the Chairperson(s), Volunteer Coordinator, Registration Coordinator, Equipment Coordinator, Treasurer and BBQ Coordinator get one child registration for free!
Coaching
To teach young kids, you do not need to be an expert in soccer. What you need is the ability to express enthusiasm and reinforce what players do right with praise, because that is what will make them feel good about soccer and doing their best.
Basic kicking, dribbling, and passing are all the skills you need and can be learned easily. Mostly you will direct the kids to play some fun soccer-skill building games like "British bulldog". Playing the right games, week after week, you will be amazed at the improvement of your players. The fuel driving their learning and improvement is having fun. When you see the kids enjoying themselves, you will find yourself having fun too.
You will be taught all of the skills you need at one of our coaching clinics held at the ECA. For dates, times, and locations, please see our key dates page. If you register to be a coach, you will be contacted with further information on the clinics and a coaching guide.
In addition, the Calgary Minor Soccer Association (CMSA) offers an optional, free, Tony Waiters online soccer coaching course.
Please sign up to volunteer helping with coaching. We intend to have two coaches for every team, in the event that you cannot make it to a game and need backup. If you are going to watch your child play soccer, what better front-row seating can you have than being on the field cheering him or her on as coach? Relax - your team will not need play-by-play direction on what to do on the field, just some encouragement and praise.
